Jonesboro church member Dr. Jim Best, Superintendent of Westside Schools, gave a very moving account of his wife’s illness from stage four endometrial cancer and her subsequent remission. The chemotherapy was not working and her counts were increasing when, in a moment of complete devastation and grief, he was led to the chapel at the West Clinic in Memphis where she was being treated. In that moment, Dr. Best realized that he couldn’t handle the emotions he felt and turned his wife’s illness over to God. The next two days were miraculous as she was able to tolerate the therapy and a week later went on a family vacation to Florida. Dr. Best nervously felt that he had to share his story. His whole family was in church with him and all were beaming. We of First United Methodist are grateful to him for the courage to share his family’s experience. I keep remembering one of my favorite sayings from al-anon, “Let Go and Let God”, believing that sometimes we can get in His way.
