Memories of Jonesboro Child Bless Many

Jonesboro child Donna Cathcart was treated at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis before her death. In her memory and in honor of that great institution, her parents Fred and Susan Cathcart chair a fund raiser each year on Super Bowl Sunday. This past Sunday was the 15th annual St. Jude S’travaganza and it is estimated that the goal of $250,000 was reached. On Saturday morning I visited with Dr. Thad Brown at the Fairgrounds as he was setting up for the cooking he would do on Sunday and he told me that he had asked Susan how many years she expected him to volunteer and that she had answered “until each child is cured”. That expresses the sentiment of each and every volunteer. Susan says the event gets larger each year and needs more volunteers and this year there were many new volunteers. It is  heartwarming to see every age volunteering,  particularly to observe the members of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity of ASU give their time to serving and helping clean up. This is a mammoth undertaking and takes the cooperation of many. While watching the game on numerous TV’s placed throughout the exhibit building at the Northeast Arkansas District Fairgrounds the 1,050 party goers were treated to ribs, shrimp, chicken, roast beef, crawfish, and all the trimmings. Many people stayed until the very end of the game. With this donation to St. Jude, Susan said they would hit the $1.5 million dollar mark. What a wonderful gift to St. Jude that the Cathcarts chose to make something good come out of the horrific loss to their family. Bad things do truly happen to good people and the Cathcarts chose to remember their daughter by making something good happen to other people in their situation. mlm
